Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often should you perform maintenance on garage doors or how do I know when?

A: Doors and operators should be lubed and adjusted annually or semi-annually depending on usage.

Q: Why should I choose an insulated door?

A: Some models of insulated doors add strength to the door by its design, along with its insulation value. For finished attached garages, the cost for insulation is well worth the additional expense.

Q: Is a steel door better than a wood door?

A: Both steel and wood doors have different quality ranges, depending on budget and look desired. Wood doors require that they be refinished more than steel doors. You can find quality in both steel and wood doors. You need to decide what is better for your needs.

Q: Should I replace both springs?

A: We highly recommend replacing extension and torsion springs in pairs if provided. There is a higher likelihood of a second spring breaking and/or door not balancing properly when not replaced in pairs. Which could mean more expense problems and downtime.

Q: Can I paint my door?

A: Any steel door can be over coated with a quality paint to color match any paint skeem. Follow manufacturers recommendations for painting, preparation and warranty.

Q: Is there a universal transmitter?

A: There is no single universal replacement transmitter that works on all door operators. Some transmitters cover a narrow segment of frequencies. Usually performance of these is not guaranteed. A direct replacement is recommended.

Q: Why should you buy from PDA Members?

A: Members are experienced /trained professionals in the door industry with a long commitment to maintaining/improving the quality of our profession for our customers.

Q: Torsion springs versus extension springs?

A: Torsion springs provide consistencies in door operation compared to extension springs, especially in larger doors. Extension spring tends to not open and close evenly because of its design.

Q: Should you weather-seal door bottoms, tops and sides?

A: A well weather-stripped door can save energy cost and help keep garage free of dirt, bugs and rodents.

Q: Why doesn't my door close; it keep's reversing?

A: If your automatic operator fails to cycle close and reverses, there are a couple of causes.
